TO THE MARKET (TTM) is founded on the belief that the best way to empower survivors of abuse, conflict, and disease is to promote their economic independence. Many of these survivors are talented artisans who produce beautiful marketable goods that can be sold globally and ultimately create a sustainable livelihood. With this economic independence comes a new sense of direction and a path forward for these courageous survivors. TTM’s goal is to promote respect, dignity, compassion, and human kindness while creating self-sufficiency for people who simply need to be given a chance. These values also form the basis for TTM’s Guiding Principles.
TTM believes that the following Guiding Principles must serve as the foundation for all of its partner relationships, beginning with the basic respect of human rights:
PROHIBITION AGAINST CHILD LABOR
Adhere to all applicable regulations regarding minimum age requirements, prohibitions on all forms of forced and indentured labor and human trafficking.
Maintain a safe and hospitable workplace environment including prevention of abuse, harassment, and discrimination in compliance with all local laws and regulations.
SAFE AND HEALTHY WORKPLACE
Provide a safe and secure physical workspace including minimizing risk of accidents, injury, and exposure to health risks.
HOURS AND WAGES
Compensate employees in accordance with the local labor market and industry. Operate in full compliance with applicable wage, work hours, overtime and benefit laws. Provide development and advancement opportunities when possible.
Behave as a good corporate citizen by respecting local laws, not engaging in bribery, corrupt or fraudulent practices. Provide systems to ensure workers’ dignity and human rights.
ASSOCIATION AND GRIEVANCES
Permit employees to join or form a labor union without fear of reprisal, intimidation, harassment or termination of employment. Provide workers with a procedure to express grievances without fear of reprisal and address valid worker concerns in a timely manner.
